Individual Opportunities

Overview

Volunteers are the heartbeat of First Light. Volunteers bring and serve dinner and stay overnight in the emergency shelter every night of the year, providing approximately 600 hours of service per month! We have approximately 25 partner churches/organizations and well over 2,000 volunteers! First Light absolutely could not provide shelter and services to Birmingham’s homeless women and children without our wonderful volunteers!

In addition to bringing and serving dinner and staying overnight in the emergency shelter every night, volunteers also conduct Bible studies, GED classes and other fun group activities for our guests. These activities provide a valuable outlet for stress and a healthy distraction for the guests.

Most importantly, just by their mere presence, our volunteers show the women and children we serve that they are important, valuable and not forgotten by the world. You can show our guests that they are not forgotten by becoming a First Light volunteer today!

You can be a hero!

General shelter duties

On occasion, staff may need help completing general shelter duties, like assembling hygiene kits, doing laundry, or cleaning and organizing donated supplies. This provides a great opportunity for young people to complete needed community service hours, and develop a strong work ethic while doing something that makes a difference in someone’s life.

Volunteer at Special Events/Fundraisers

Large fundraisers, such as the First Light Gala, are hard work! We often need volunteers to help with the preparation, set-up, clean-up and during the event. We also often need help hand-writing acknowledgements during our Holiday Lights fundraiser. These are good opportunities for those who want to volunteer, but can’t do so on a regular basis.

Bring and serve breakfast

Breakfast is served from 6:30-7:30am Monday-Friday and from 7:30-8:30am on Saturday and Sunday. We serve 50-60 women at breakfast. You may serve something as simple as pastries or doughnuts or you may cook a hot meal for the women. Your choice! We have milk and coffee here, so you are not required to bring drinks, although the women love having choices! Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule a day to bring breakfast!

Collect and deliver wish list supplies

First Light’s wish list is comprised of items that we provide to our guests on a daily basis. We rely on donations of these items and would love your help collecting them! You can request that your family, friends, co-workers or members of your church or civic organization collect these supplies to be delivered to First Light! This is a great opportunity for those who want to help out, but who have time restraints keeping them from staying overnight or bringing and serving breakfast or dinner.

Group Opportunities

Volunteering at First Light is a wonderful and rewarding family or small group activity! If you would like to be part of the team and do something that REALLY makes a difference in someone else’s life, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

Bring and serve dinner

First Light serves dinner to an average of 50-60 women and children per night. Even if there are less than 60 guests here, our ladies will always eat enough for 60. Dinner is served every night at 6:30PM. If you will be late or unable to come on your scheduled night, please call 323-4277 and let a staff member know.    Dinner Volunteer Information
