Request a Book Reading

First Light is available to come to talk with your book club, Sunday School class, adult education class, or other groups about homelessness and the lifestyles of our guests.

As you know, we have published a book, First Light: The Story of a Shelter for Homeless Women and Children. The author, Ellen Dossett, is willing to do readings for larger groups, if you would be interested in such. The book has been written using our guests’ own words speaking about how being at First Light helped them and changed their lives. Our entire staff talks about working with homeless women and children…it is very moving.

In addition, the story of how the shelter was actually started back in the early 1980’s is included with reproductions of documents, rules, volunteer log notes and many photos taken on through current day. The photography in the book is beautiful.

This would make a very nice activity and discussion group with a question and answer period after certain sections are read to the group. The first of these events was actually a combination wine tasting and reading from the book in someone’s home. The host invited work and social friends who she wanted to better get to know this very special agency.

If you are interested in inviting First Light for an activity to talk about how women and children deal with homelessness, please fill out this form and someone will contact you as soon as possible. If you would prefer, you can contact Deborah Everson at 205-323-4277 or deborah.everson@firstlightshelter.org.
